The Newfoundland and Labrador government plans to drop the word "savages" from its 400-year-old coat of arms. According to CTV, Premier Andrew Furey made the announcement Wednesday and noted his government is introducing legislation to amend the Coat of Arms Act.

The amendment would remove the word "savages" and replace it with "Beothuk," which is the name of Indigenous people who inhabited the island portion of the province just as European settlers arrived. In addition, the government plans to add Labrador to the coat of arms.

The coat of arms features two indigenous warriors in traditional clothing, standing on each side of a red shield.

This news comes as the Liberal government announced its intentions to amend the coat of arms in June 2018. The push for change was brought on by the party Indigenous Peoples Commission.
